"The Beginning" aka 1/2 of "Song of Singing"

"Chick Corea's bargain basement priced "The Beginning" on Laserlight is actually five of the nine songs that comprised the now out of print domestic issue of "The Song of Singing" on Blue Note (see my review of the import version). Three songs, Ornette Coleman's "Blues Connotation," "Ballad II" and "Drone," were bonus tracks on the original stateside CD, and are unavailable on the current import versions of "Song of Singing." Anyone who has purchased that import version, needs to get this as well. For others, this music is classic, free jazz from one of the greatest trios ever, and you can't beat the price of this disc if you want to check it out. A final note, those interested in this release should also check out Corea's "Early Days" (and my review of it) -- dollar for dollar another one of the best values in all music."
