Chet at his best

"Forgoing the usual heavy orchestaration, Chet relaxes here with some of his friends; stars in their own right. The casual arrangement allows his true genius on the guitar to really show, as he is playing for his fellow musicians. He'll occasionally show off a bit, indulge in a little one-upsmanship, and basically just have a lot of fun. On many of his albums, brilliant as they may be, he seems a tad inhibited, as if the pressure of being on stage is making him self-conscious. He often seems to cope with this by surrounding himself with orchestration that provides him with "cover", as it were. Every track on this album is worth a listen, but two really stand out for me: "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind?", with Dolly Parton is a gem, and their friendly banter is a delight. "Terry On the Turnpike", with Boots Randolph, is another standout. I onlly hope they re-release it on CD!"
