(4 out of 5 stars)
"This CD includes two previously issued concerts under the OJC (original jazz classics) label: Bird on 52nd street and Bird at St Nicks (minus one alternate take of a song). So the price is right, you are basically getting two for the price of one.
These are great live dates by Bird, no doubt about he is in full flight. But the sound of this recordings is VERY ROUGH. Recorded on portable machines over 60 years ago; so it sounds as if you are outside the club on the pouring rain. This is understandable of course, and these recordings belong in every Charlie Parker collection.
But please dont make this your first Charlie Parker purchase, or even your first LIVE Charlie Parker, you might be disappointed with the sound.
I am deducting one star for Concord. Nowhere in the external package they are informing you that these are two previous live sessions in bad sound you are getting. It is packaged as it is a 'Greatest Hits' collection of Bird's classic sides (for which they dont have the rights by the way)."
