CD ReviewsDifferent versions of old favorites Robert C. Topper | Richardson, Texas | 06/23/1999 (5 out of 5 stars) "A great collection of 25 recordings made on one day for the NBC transcription service, Thesaurus. (Can any band today do that? 25 tunes in one day! And they probably had a dance gig the same day, too.) Many were charts they had recently recorded commercially on Bluebird, or were to record in the next few months. Some never did get done on commercial records. Among the best are "Blue Juice" and "Wild Mab of the Fish Pond" (buy the CD and read the liner notes to find out how that got its name), as well as an excellent two part version of "Wings Over Manhattan". Lena Horne sings "It's a Haunted Town" with much more confidence than she did for Bluebird just four days earlier. My favorite though is "Little John Ordinary". Even if you have all of the Bluebird versions, as I have, its great to hear different performances from one of the outstanding swing bands of the era."
