This is the last of four albums comprising all of Charles Mingus's work for the Candid label, and it contains one previously unsuspected (and, of course, unissued) alternate take of great interest. For the rest, it gathers together material that was only released for the first time in the Mosaic boxed set of Mingus recordings, alongside tracks that were issued in 1961 although included not in Mingus albums but in the compilations The Jazz Life (Candid #79019) and Newport Rebels (Candid #79022). The album features unique combinations of musicians - Mingus with Roy Eldridge, Booker Little with Jo Jones, Benny Bailey with Abbey Lincoln and others. The Newport rebellion is long over, but it's crackling spirit goes on forever here.
