CD Reviews"From This Moment On" I Dig Charles McPherson! Michael B. Richman | Portland, Maine USA | 06/01/2010 (4 out of 5 stars) "I was not that familiar with alto saxophonist Charles McPherson until I picked up several of his OJC CDs in the cut-out bin at a local store. For those of you who don't know this underrated jazzman, he recorded a string of records for Prestige in the mid and late 60s, which are all being deleted (save one, his debut). Unfortuantely, it took me a little longer to track down a used copy of "From This Moment On!" as it was already out-of-print before Fantasy remaindered half of the OJC series, and it cost me a bit more too :-(. This album recorded on January 31, 1968 falls chronologically between Con Alma and Horizons (see my reviews for both), but the alto man has yet to explore the intensity found in his later sessions. He is instead still solidly showcasing the modern hard bop that was his signature for so many years with Mingus. The quintet for this date includes Cedar Walton, Peck Morrison, Lenny McBrowne, and a young, incendiary guitarist who would go on to big things, Pat Martino. "From This Moment On," keep your eyes open for an inexpenisve copy of this disc!"
