"This stands with the giants of Jamaican music. It's a shame these artists weren't afforded more recognition because the work on this disc is second to none. Lopez Walker, in particular, has to be heard. Simply beautiful. That statement actually applies to all the songs here.
This is a collection of singles released on the Phase One label over twenty years ago. They make their first appearance on CD on this collection along with their dub versions or disco mixes.
The rhythm tracks were supplied by the Revolutionaries and are outstanding. Sly Dunbar must have been touched by God.
Own this at any cost. Overcome all obstacles and get it in your collection."
TRUE hidden gem!

"I admit I bought this initially because i am a Blood and Fire (the BEST reissue label!) completist, and was struck immediately by the quality of the tracks contained... some of the most beautiful and concious tracks you could hope to dig up are contained within... "Assemble Not Thyself" by the Terrors (WHO???), "Desperate Time" by the Chantells are right up there with the cream of reggae's elite... Phase One's output was not large, but with quality like this - you can tell the label was TRULY a labor of love... Also try to find the equally excellent CD "We Are Getting Bad: The Sound of Phase One"- another NO OVERLAP collection of additional tracks - same era, same amazing quality... BUY THIS CD!"

"Phase One is probally my favorite label. I have almost everything that is available on this label, which is not much. This set put together by the master Steve Barrow is by far one of the best reggae cds I have listened to. If you are thinking about buying this cd, it is a no brainer just get it. Those who have alot of this stuff on vinyl must get the cd as well being that the sound quailty is excellent. Just to have a listenable version of Natty Supper is worth it alone."
The HOLY GRAIL of reggae music

"I've been collecting roots reggae for several years and was surprised that I hadn't heard many of the tracks on the disc. Based on the quality of the Blood and Fire releases, I purchased the disc with out reading any reviews. My friend and I sat down to give it a listen and were mesmerized. All tracks are tight and the quality is superb. It has a great roots feel with simple yet heavy grooves that will make those who don't realize they like reggae ask for a copy. The dubs are nice and the vocal echoes are not out-of-control, like on some dub shots. Every track is hot and most like "Fly Away" but I'm partial to "Trial Days". The opening lines "Here I am standing, I never trouble wicked man..." invokes the vision of a humble Rasta on the street in Jamaica being harassed by police.
After listening to the disc my friend and I checked the reviews. We were not surprised to see this album is highly touted and had to come with a strong review title. To sum it up, get this CD before it is out-of-print and is no longer available.

"I knew none of these singers or vocal groups -- and am amazed at how totally beautiful these sounds are. Incredible harmonies and the lyrics are earnest, spiritual cries for justice.. every track has the extended "discomix" -- great steppers riddims. I totally recommend this if you like real reggae music, one of the best I have heard. Ranks with Heart of the Congos, tho' of course the production sound is diffferent."
