NO STUDIO TRICKERY HERE......

"Paul McCartney once said he would have preferred "Let It Be" and "The Long and Winding Road" be released without Phil Spectors "studio sweetening". Unlike too many artists today Cesar heeds Sir Paul McCartney's sentiments and gives it to you straight, no superficial tones or studio gadgets to enhance this album. Just like the old pros, Bennett, Cole or Presley, Marquez sings from the heart, through the mic, straight to you. An exceptionally smooth baritone with minimal production foolery is exactly what you get. Especially worthwhile tracks are his stirring rendition of "O Holy Night", his smooth jazz version of "Joy to the World" and his pervading, self penned "A Child is Born". What you're hearing is for real. And when you have some of the best musicians in the game along for the ride, Munyungo Jackson (Miles Davis), Don Markese (Neil Diamond), Russel Blake (Sonny Rollins) Nicole Garcia (David Foster) and Phil Cordaro (Billy Preston) who needs glazing?
To be blunt, this guy was born in the wrong era, but then again this music is timeless. A very good album by a refreshingly real crooner, without (as my wife puts it) all the "cover up".

"I came across "Cesar & Strings / At the Heart of Christmas" while purchasing some Dean Martin and Tony Bennet albums. What a nice surprise. Unfortunately there were only 2 sound clips, "Joy to the World" and "O Holy Night" (which I really liked) so I was a bit hesitant to purchase the album. But once I did I was very pleased. He has a warm, silky voice that is very soothing, and the music, part classical, part smooth jazz suits him just right. His personalized "The First Noel" is a nice introduction and sets the mood for the rest of the album. If you're looking for a swinging, bata bing type of album, this is not it. Every song on this album is smooth and warm. Although he manages to kick off his shoes on several tracks like "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", the album as a whole is cool & laidback. I'll put this one between my Bing Crosby favorite and Mariah Carey's Christmas album, where I'll be sure to revisit every year."
