CD ReviewsShe uses her voice like an instrument and has some REAL tale Steven I. Ramm | Phila, PA USA | 01/03/2010 (4 out of 5 stars) "I discovered Cathy at the International Jazz Educators conference a few years ago and began listening to her CD. This was the first one and, from the first track - a tribute to guitarist Jim Hall, using his name to scat through the lyrics - I knew she was someone special. I can't think of another jazz vocalist with her vocal qualities. Its husky, yet smooth.
This CD contains songs all written by C S-G, either alone or in combo with her husband, except for the Disney standard "When You Wish Upon A Star". They range in style from melodious to adventurous. My other favorite track closes the album. It's titled "Everything's Down to Earth". Its not the lyrics that capture me as much as the arrangements. C S-G is based in Los Angeles and seems to have a pretty steady jazz club circuit schedule. Living in LA, she has lots of West Coast musician friends, who join her on this album. There's Yellowjackets Russ Ferrante on keyboards and Greg Bisonette on drums on some tracks. And, of course, Cathy on vocals. I keep coming back to that first track, but maybe you'll discover your own favorite C S-G tune. Steve Ramm "Anything Phonographic" " |
