Synopsis

Following the impressive success of Smashing Pumpkins, Liz Phair, and Urge Overkill, the major labels descended on Chicago and scooped up several deserving younger bands, including Midwestern shoegazers Catherine. The quintet's first album, Sorry, is an enticing mix of swirling guitars, driving rhythms, and lilting vocal harmonies. Yes, they sound a bit like the Pumpkins, but bandleader Neil Jendon has a better sense of humor than his mentor Billy Corgan, as evidenced by the band's motto ("Better living through noise") and the album's killer cover of the Bee Gees' ditty, "Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You." --Jim DeRogatis

CD Reviews

Heard this band when I was living in SF

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Got this CD as a promo release in 94 and immediately thought like most, they sound like the Pumpkins...but I thought the talent was deeper and the potential was greater for a band that sported 3 guitarists, bass and drums. Their sound was thick, swirling and great fun to drive or ride to. It's too bad that they were marketed as a Pumpkins knock-off. They probably could have done more. But this record -- their first for TVT, I believe -- really showcases the heavy, energetic style their 3-guitar sound made better than all 3 of their releases. My favorites -- Bee Gees "Every Christian..." and "Funny Bunny" (A great song to hear when riding on a Velodrome)"
