"Ronald Shannon Jackson is the star of this "free jazz" show, and not because of his two gravelly vocal appearances. The man's drumming holds it all together, presaging the changes in tempo for the improvisors. Mr. Brotzman (what a great name for a bass clarinet player) lays down some fine subterranean notes, and Sonny Sharrock noodles in on guitar, and of course we have the legendary Bill Laswell on bass. But Jackson is prominently heard throughout, moving nimbly from tempo to tempo.
Speaking of the vocals, these are done in fine compliment to the clarinet, growled more than sung. But, hey, I don't think we would have recognized song two as the eternal standard "Big Boss Man" without Ronald's one verse of lyrics! But, you won't buy this expecting some honey voiced crooner anyway, or even Jimmy Reed!!"
