CD ReviewsNot since those first two Elliot Smith records... A. Davis | 06/24/2003 (5 out of 5 stars) "have I been so pleasantly surprised by a new discovery. Listen to the above links and hunt down mp3s at the monitor records website or wherever, because describing music is stupid, so I won't. [Belle and Sebastian? Lee Hazlewood? those couple of good East River Pipe songs? ok, we're done with that part of the review.] But this is a very satisfying record. You will see that for yourself if you listen to the bits...Don't buy from monitor records (his label) though--it was weeks and weeks before I could even elicit a response from them as to where my stuff was. Another thing, many web reviews seem to find this wanting after his EP. I myself like this album much better. Not that this sounds anything like Pavement, but if you prefer your artists Wowee Zowee to Terror Twilight, you will prefer this. If the reverse is true, you will probably prefer the EP. This is not to imply that they are as different-sounding as those albums are, but that gives you an idea." Gee, it's good to have Cass back again.... Jason Nelson | Cedar Falls, Iowa United States | 08/22/2003 (5 out of 5 stars) "I have to admit, I was already a fan of Cass McCombs having heard the 'not the way' ep. I couldn't help but be reminded of a young Bob Dylan in some way after giving 'not the way' many, many listens....that rollicking Dylan phase that produced 'Highway 61 Revisited' and 'Blonde On Blonde'. I'm not saying that Cass sounds like a Dylan rip off...i mean who does? There's just something similiar, maybe it's the laid back yet sharp songs, along with a voice that sounds like no one else. 'A' is even more playful than 'not the way' and there's more to love. The songs are still have a very similiar feel to them. I highly recommend both of his releases. Cass McCombs already has a sound that seems to be all his own, even the recording is very original. I have to go back and listen to 'A' again. I can't seem to get the songs out of my head."
