Synopsis
Album Description Import pressing features 'Why' as an additional bonus track over the US version. The first and still the best of the many Carly Simon compilations available, 1975's THE BEST OF CARLY SIMON is an all-meat, no-filler collection of most of the folk-pop singer/songwriter's best and biggest songs. Looking over the track listing, one is reminded of just how many classic songs Simon was responsible for in the early '70s. "That's the Way I've Always Heard it Should Be", "The Right Thing to Do", "Haven't Got Time For the Pain", "Anticipation", and of course "You're So Vain" still sound remarkably solid. This is particularly impressive considering the amount of radio time they've all gotten in the intervening decades. Simon's husky voice and smart, piano-based arrangements don't sound nearly as dated as those of many of her contemporaries, and while THE BEST OF CARLY SIMON may qualify as a guilty pleasure in some minds, it's a pleasure nonetheless. 11 tracks. CD ReviewsThese are the good old days! G. E. Williams | California | 02/18/2009 (5 out of 5 stars) "Although I owned several of Carly Simon's LP's back when I was a young man, I seldom listened to them with the exception of this (the first) The Best of Carly Simon ( I did however look at the cover to Playing Possuman awful lot). The Amazon Editor's review says it well, "This is all meat and no filler".
Although Ms. Simon was a rich kid whom I would have had little in common, the songs always spoke to me both with her emotive vocals and her amazing lyrics that changed effortlessly from narrative verse "My father sits at night with no lights on; His cigarette glows in the dark. The living room is still; I walk by, no remark." To vivid metaphors "You say we'll soar like two birds through the clouds, but soon you'll cage me on your shelf" "That's the way I've always heard it should be", "Anticipation", "I haven't got time for the Pain", "The Right thing to Do" are four of my favorite songs of all time. The `70s was the time I went to High School and spent my early young adult days so maybe I'm not objective, but for me that was about the best time for music of all genres' and that especially includes singer song-writer music and this is among the best of the era. Last year I had an epiphany of sorts, when in the song "Anticipation" Ms. Simon muses "these are the good old days" the obvious inference was we should live in the now and not look off to the future. My wife and I concluded that no, what she really meant was the 70s were the good old days. But maybe that's just us! So here's the deal, The newer Best of Carly Simon "Reflections" Reflections: Carly Simon's Greatest Hits has a more career spanning collection, but this budget priced early collection is all good and a great buy.
