Synopsis

Amazon.com essential recording
This collaboration with new age keyboard star Peter Kater is the album that introduced Nakai mainstream record buyers. On its release, Natives stayed on Billboard's New Age Chart for almost a year, paving the way for the current renaissance in the Native flute. Once again the music is totally improvised, with Kater's romantic melodies and fat, left-hand chord clusters on the concert grand, providing a fertile environment for Nakai's flights of improvisational fancy. And although Kater is an impressive piano stylist, this is clearly Nakai's show; the brittle tones of his Eagle-bone whistle, and his measured chanting to the accompaniment of an Algonquin turtle rattle always move the music to a higher plane. --j. poet

A Fusion that Works

"I received this disc as a gift, having never heard of Peter Kater and only being remotely familiar with R. Carlos Nakai (I had "Canyon Trilogy"). This rapidly became a desert island top 10 selection for me. This is so much more than just a flute and piano, but rather a full-fledged spiritual journey. The first cut, "Centering," is aptly named as it prepares you for the spiritual travel that is to follow. Each subsequent cut takes you on a geographic/metaphorical journey, and if you listen closely, you will "hear" the places/feelings described by the music. After completing the circuit and "Recentering," you will once again be at peace with all of creation. From start to finish, the music is delivered with great sensitivity and authenticity--a true musical epiphany. Buy the disc, find 47 minutes without distraction, put on the headphones, and emerge a new person"

"I once had a cassette of this and it was accidently taped over and my heart was broken. I had searched all over and found the cd and since, have held it close to my heart. Regaurdless of what opinions of what Carlos's music is supposed to be like, or what traditional Native American music is supposed to be like, I find that this cd is a wonderful mix of music to create such a peaceful and moving atmosphere. It brings tears to my eyes, makes me think of wonderful, and peaceful places.
If you have an open mind for music and are willing to accept that a Native style flute and a contemporary style piano can play together, without getting uptight about it, then you will find this to be one of Carlos and Peter's best works together."
Meditative and peaceful...

"I bought this on a whim and am so glad I did. R. Carlos Nakai's flute and chanting and Kater's piano seem fluid together. There are some beautiful harmonies that cause me to relax and forget about the worries of life for a while. It's moody and often brooding yet it's lovely music. Good for a nice change from the norm."
