CD ReviewsA Classic Stax Album From A Great Soul Artist Christopher D. Shaner | Rocky Hill, Connecticut USA | 02/13/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) "Carla Thomas recorded several great albums for the legendary Stax label throughout the sixties, but this one may be her best (with 'The Queen Alone' following close behind). Originally issued in 1966 as Stax 709, this Collectables reissue is the rare STEREO mix that was passed over in favor of the mono version when it was re-released by Rhino in 1994. Both are excellent, but I have always preferred the stereo mix for the almost 'Beatle-esque' split in what you hear in each channel. Often, it is very distinct (vocal in one channel, drums and other instruments in the other). The overall sound turns out to be very enjoyable, because the extra echo that results from the stereo setup adds another layer of punch to the already fat Stax rhythm section. The songs on this set are all great, and are soulfully delivered by Carla, one the most talented of all the Stax artists. Standout tracks are, of course, the infectious "B-A-B-Y" (which really shines in the stereo mix), "Red Rooster" (with Al Jackson Jr. pounding the daylights out his drums - a real knockout performance), and the marvelous medley "Baby What You Want Me To Do / For Your Love", a triumph for both singer and musicians. I am so happy that Collectables has selected this fine album for reissue, complete with the original album jacket art, in an attractive jewel case presentation. Highly recommended!"
