"the cardinal sin, (formerly known as cadillac blindside) have released the official sleeper album of 2006. meaning that the album and band are suprisingly under the radar for making a stellar record. last year, emanuel's "soundtrack to a headrush" was the record that i thought didn't get any recognition for how great it was. "hurry up and wait" is too a stellar record with deserving listens.
there was some hype surrounding the band at the beginning of the year (one of Ap's 100 bands you need to know) but surprisingly the album hasn't gotten any recognition it deserves. yes, the comparisons to alkaline trio are evident but the cardinal sin are so much more. alkaline trio are one of my favorite bands but sometimes their morbid, immature lyrics can be to much. with the cardinal sin, the music is similiar in the dark, moody, angular guitars, catchiness aspect to the alkaline trio. the lyrics for the most part are straightforward, mature, and relatable which makes them stand apart from the trio.
the music itself seems a little darker than the alkaline trio (listen to the last track "hell of a saint") and has a more raw sound that gives the album a fresh take on dark punk without seeming overly-depressing.
if you dig bands like the alkaline trio, the lawrence arms, bayside, the smoking popes, and hey mercedes; you definitely will enjoy this album. the year's not over yet, and i can't find one reason why this album shouldn't be on the top 10 list of the year for everyone. if more people knew about them, i'm sure they would be.
"hurry up and wait" is dark, moody punk rock at it's best and is an album i can see myself liking for a long time. i highly recommend this album...
