Synopsis

Album Description
David Kelly is one of hip-hop's most prolific and coherent voices, having written a book ("Fresh Air") and recorded four albums. On "Insomnia", he takes his largest artistic strides to date and presents perhaps the most politically charged hip-hop album of all time. Considering the tumultuous era in which we live, this release is as timely as it is articulate and inspiring. "...Capital D's calm, authoritative flow effortlessly recalls the mic-wrecking skills of old schoolers Big Daddy Kane and Rakim, while his lyrics and song structures reflect a similar fondness for hip-hop's past"--The Onion.

CD Reviews

Dope Follow-Up to Writer's Block
Michel Mees | Ekeren, Antwerp BELGIUM | 12/26/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Maybe not as appealing to some as the Writer's Block Soundtrack but definitely worth a good look. As always, cap D brings deep and tight lyrics that keep you interested throughout the whole album. The style of production on the album is in the same mold as the All Natural albums. A well rounded album that will not only please Chicago Hip-Hop fans but about anyone that feels dope Underground Hip-Hop. 3.5 Stars"

"Even though Cap released this album in 2004, I just picked it up a few months ago. In all the years I've been listening to Capital D, I've never heard him this angry. He deftly exercises his first amendment rights from the first to the last, wisely segueing some of the heavy stuff with instrumentals like Mississippi, inviting the listener to digest and contemplate. Lyrics like "Arrest the effing president" (from Vent) don't tread lightly over the issues he addresses. On Culture of Terrorism, he points out the hypocrisy of the Bush Administration's War on Terror. With Miss America, he lets us know that we as a culture are not off the hook, either. Listen to Blowback, and you'll want to revisit the 9/11 tragedy and what brought it on. 1984 will make the hairs stand up on your neck. Cap does his homework on this one; if you care to do some yourself (as you might after hearing this album) I recommend reading The New Jackals and moving on to Ghost Wars and The Looming Tower. Finishing with the upbeat flute cut Iman shows that he hasn't lost all the hope that he had on previous records like Godspeed (from All Natural's Second Nature).

While the lyrics can be hard to follow at times, Capital D is kind enough to share them in the liner notes. I suggest looking them over a few times to get the full effect.

Shame on us all for letting this album's release go quietly the way most underground records do. Thanks to Capital D for having the cheeky foresight to name it Insomnia, knowing we'd all probably sleep on it but also knowing those of us who hear it will never sleep soundly again."
