"Skip Sempe directs Capriccio Stravagante in a performance instrumental adaptations of songs by Antonio de Cabezon (1510-1566) and other composers he was influenced by and those he influenced.
"An important theme of the recording is the encounter of Spanish "Golden Age" musicians, and particularly Cabezon, with the music of foreigners. A large majority of the originals began life as compositions by representatives of the Franco-Flemish school: Nicolas Gombert (c.1495-c.1560), Pierre Sandrin (c.1490-c.1560), Cipriano da Rore (1515-65), Josquin Desprez (c.1440-1521), Thomas Crecquillon (c.1490-1557), and Jacob Arcadelt (c.1505-68). Besides Cabezon himself, the Spanish arrangers include his son, Hernando (1541-1602), Alonso Mudarra (c.1510-c.1580), Luys de Narvaez (fl.1530-50), Diego Ortiz (c.1510-c.1570), and Cristobal de Morales (c.1500-53)."
