Cannonball's first...and with brother Nat sounding great..

"This is Cannonball's first volley, but you can tell right away that his powder is dry, and there is enough fodder for many attacks to come. Clocking in at under 40 minutes, both Cannon and brother Nat pack a lot into a relatively short sermon. In fact, Nat impresses just as much as does his brother on this one. Hank Jones, Paul Chambers, and "Klook" - Kenny Clarke - provide ample cover for the brothers. "Still Talkin' To Ya" serves as a declaration that Cannonball can write as well as play - in fact, all but one tune was penned by Julian. No wonder there was such a stir in the big Apple over this soon to be legend. I'm sure that the outrageously priced, remasterered import sounds killer, but I notice that Rudy Van Gelder was the engineer, and that copies are available used for a tenth of the import price. I suggest that you grab one, now, and see for yourself what all the fuss was about."

"On the quality of the music, I can add little to the review of 'douglasnegley'. The rhythm section appeared to be mixed a little low but nothing I would mark down for. I found the copy that I listened to in the local public library. It was on the Jazz Heritage label not on the original Savoy label. Reference was made to license via Columbia Nissan. The cover photo was of Cannonball alone holding his saxophone not the entire quintet as shown on the Amazon Import. This would indicate that the Import is priced a bit "aggressively" but based on this performance I plan on purchasing some of his other CD's which are priced in line with similar jazz classsics."
