Synopsis

Last time, he was mad at LL Cool J. This time Canibus is just mad, and his animalistic lyrics prove it throughout the 14 tracks that make up 2000 B.C.. "In bare knuckle boxing speed is the object / weaving and dodging with defensive blocking," he says of his lyrical strategy on the title cut. And he sticks to that plan as he rips through tracks laced with strings, classical choirs, pianos, and merciless drums. Canibus loops an answering-machine message for the hook on "Mic-nificent" and trades verses with the legendary Rakim on "I'll Buss 'Em U Punish 'Em." Hip-hop hasn't heard it this raw in a long time. But for those who like it smooth and poppy, 2000 B.C. is way before your time. --Kenji Jasper

CD Reviews

Much better than I expected....
J. Storm | The Abyss | 08/05/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I bought this album with relatively low expectations, after reading many average reviews on it. But I must say, this is a much better album than some mags and online reviews make it out to be.
Standouts on here include the title track (in which he goes after Wyclef), the much improved version of "Watch Who You Beef Wit," and the Canibus/Rakim lyrical overload "I'll Buss Em U Punish Em." On "100 Bars," Bus flows nonstop for almost 5 minutes, definitely an accomplishment not many in rap could achieve as smoothly as he did it. And on "Horse Mentality," Can's 4 Horsemen brethren stop by for yet another lyrical joyride.
But the top tracks on this album come back to back at #'s 9 & 10, "Doomsday News" and "Lost @ C." Both feature sick beats and lyrically-viscious flows, sure to make your rewind button hot.
All that being said, Canibus is one dimensional lyrically on this CD--it's all about showin off his battle skills. This can be very impressive, and it is impressive on here, but it does tend to get a little old after a while. There are no tracks like "How Come" anywhere on here. No deep, meaningful lyrics. Even just one or two tracks like that and this album could've been a classic. The beats are far superior to "Can-I-Bus," and his lyrical talent cannot be denied. It's just too bad there wasn't a little more variety.
Definitely a recommended buy though. He proves without a doubt that he's the illest battle MC in the game."
Canibus "2000 B.C. (Before Canibus)" is INCREDIBLE!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I got the last Canibus CD and i was very dissapointed so i was really looking forward to this album, but a friend recommended it to me, so i thought i'd give it a try...and wow this cd have "classic" written all over it. Not only is the appearence of the outside of the cd cool, but the music inside is INCREDIBLE. First of all the lyrics of this cd are some of the best lyrics ever. It isn't one of those cd's you listen to for a week and take out of your cd player, this is like a cd you can listen to for a month and not get bored. The beats on this cd are so much improved from his last cd it's incredible. Now lets talk about some of the songs, the introduction song of the cd "c-quel" had incredible energy, great lyrics and wow i like it....the main theme of the cd "2000 b.c." is a great song the lyrics and rhymes can't be beat..."Ill Buss Em You Punish Him" is one of the most incredible songs i have ever heard, adding rapper Rakim to this song keeps it tight and the lyrics are too good for my ears...."Horsementality" which features Kurupt (My favorite rapper)is also a good song with featuring artists...all the songs on this cd are incredible and there is too much to say about everything on every songTo sum it up this is a great album that is worth your money trust me"
4.5 Stars on this lyrical joy ride!

"You've got to go back to 95-97 to appreciate the lyrical brainstorm Canibus has been given to the hip-hop underground. DJ-Clue, Tony Touch, Flex, Doo-Wop and many other DJs have had there mix tapes Lyrically Blessed my Canibus. This is one of the very few all around true MC. This kat can rhyme on a level above all other MC's. Not sence KRS-One has anybody had the skill to free style off the top of his head for an entire show. This CD is much better than the last and should be copped just because of his battling style. Rakim appears on one of his joints and they rip that track to shreds. This kat is the logo and bluebrint to a real MC.oNe"
