Viva la Republica!

"For that small (and, I fear, rapidly diminishing number) of people who know what Malraux meant when he said, "It was in Spain that we learned that one could be right and yet be beaten," this album will be a reminder of the days when civilization stood in the balance on the dusty plains and harsh mountains of Spain. The recording quality is uneven; the tracks were recorded--long before high fidelity, let alone stereo or digital--at many different places and times. But that gives an authenticity sorely lacking in most recordings. (A note: Despite the foregoing, many of the songs are sung by Pete Seeger; to the best of my knowledge, he was not in Spain during la Guerra.) If you want to see Spain to visit places like Jarama, Gurenica and Teruel, this album is for you. No Pasaran!"
Great collection of stirring songs

"I used to have this as a vinyl record and I played it constantly. Some of the songs sound like anthems, some are fun, some are downright sad. But hearing them sung in a variety of languages--English, German, Spanish--gives a rhythmic sense of the international significance and reach of the Spanish Civil War. It's a very good record, both as good listening and as an historical document."
