CD Reviews

Camel's Best Gets The Well-Deserved Deluxe Treatment
Cactus Ed | Pacific Northwest | 10/16/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Okay, okay, I'll admit this is something like the seventh time I've bought Camel's masterpiece, The Snowgoose. Album when it came out in 1975, then 8-track and then again cassette for my old hippie van, and then every version of CD, including this FINAL edition. The original lineup of Camel was one of my all-time favorite groups, and this is their Magnum Opus. Disc 1 is excellent, of course, though not much different from the previous re-master. Disc 2 is a pared-down "naked" version of most of Snow Goose and it sounds fantastic, really clear sound and stereo separation. It's just Peter, Andrew, Doug and Andy playing live, no overdubs or symphonic additions like on the album. And though I really love the live album with the London Symphony helping out, these guys really make a lot of music on their own. The exchanges between Peter Bardens and Andrew Latimer, on Hammond organ and electric guitar, respectively, are just gorgeous, really tight and very emotional, very moving. They moved so freely and melodically, partly because of the tight rhythm section of Andy Ward on drums and Doug Ferguson on bass. This was just a great band, way too underrated in their time and in the history of British progressive rock."
