Synopsis

The dancehall craze was a predictable mix of fresh-from-the- streets inspiration and opportunistic hustle, but the Jamaican rap movement threatened to marginalize the classic reggae mode of hypnotic, melodic grooves and political/spiritual prophecies. With the deaths of Bob Marley and Peter Tosh and the emigration of Jimmy Cliff, Burning Spear is one of the few classic reggae artists still working in Jamaica, but The World Should Know was his best in more than a decade and a welcome reminder of that tradition's virtues. Bright brass riffs offset Burning Spear's authoritative baritone voice as each song locks into a melodic/rhythmic pattern that grabs one's attention and won't let go. --Geoffrey Himes

Burning Spear = Quality roots reggae
Mark A. Kintzley | Phoenix, AZ | 01/01/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"One question: Why can't this guy release a bad album? That's all I want to know. Now to answer your question: Is this a good cd? NO...It is a GREAT cd as are all Burning Spear releases. Spear ranges from the dark haunting hypnotic conscious vocals to the light-hearted playful and still hypnotic vocals. Spear, as always, clings solidly to his roots beginnings and it is evident in every word he utters. The song I Stand Strong is an understatement. Winston Rodney is a large piece of the puzzle in the foundation of true spiritual roots reggae. For all ages, colors, and creeds. Good music is just good music no matter how you slice it!"
