Amazon.com Harder than the rest? That's what Spear used to be, back in the day. But the times of being dry and heavy have long gone, and there's more than a little gray in the beard. But that doesn't mean the Rastaman has lost his fire, only that the flames don't leap as high. Look, anyone who can come up with a paean to Jerry Garcia ("Play Jerry") and not have me chucking the thing in the bin is doing something right. The fact is, Spear is one of the few Jamaicans playing true reggae as most people know it. For most artists, dancehall seems to have begot ragga and dance, and that distinctive offbeat has vanished. But Winston Rodney (the man you know as Spear) keeps it alive, from the woozy, slightly psychedelic kick of the horns in "The Future (Clean it Up)" through the end of "Loving You," and he does it in the fashion of a master. No "rockers riddims," perhaps, but with bite and joy, and the teachings of Rastafari uppermost in his mind. Time has passed, but the masters stay strong. --Chris Nickson Similar CDs

CD ReviewsOld but not cold baby_t | 07/05/1999 (5 out of 5 stars) "Old Winston Rodney has remained with very few reggstas who keeps the Old fire burnin`. Still sticking as I could hear him in this new album Appointment with his Majesty, nowadays one can only mention very few men who can be categorically compared to this Old timer.I firmly believe that only Joseph Hill of Culture is sticking together with Burning spear-like music which is the father and mother of all this fussy lyrics without a riddim and zero understanding [raggamuffin]. Well, only time will tell because true reggae is fading and we reggae fans will have no choice rather than sticking to the old fire, fayaa !!!!!!!" Jah bless this man baby_t | SWEDEN | 08/08/2000 (5 out of 5 stars) "It is Jah's hand touching us through Burning Spear's music. And it is really good to listen to the guidance of the wise elder. My favorites in this CD: Appointment With His Majesty and African Jamaican.Jah bless Peace and one love" Spear is the Bomb! Dee Sumpter | Charlotte, NC USA | 10/05/2000 (5 out of 5 stars) "I've followed 'Spear' for about 7 years now. A very dear friend of mines is the lead trumpet player of the group, James Smith aka 'Supe'. A very fine gentleman from down south. Say, could you possibly tell me how I could find out when 'Spear' will be playing in North Carolina again? And ask James to give Dee a call in Charlotte, NC on my toll free number. Thanks! Loving Spear in the South"
