CD Reviews

AN EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE.ESSENTIAL
James D. Jones | DeFuniak Springs, FL USA | 10/24/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I dont know where this recording came from, there are no liner notes or information as to its origin included, but what you have is Burl Ives in top form performing his most popular selections from the Wayfaring Stranger period of the 1940's.The sound quality is excellent and Ives'voice sounds better than anything else Ive ever heard. The best part of this collection is that he introduces every song with a few words about its origin. Its like having the man himself in your music room for a private performance. To date this is the best Ives CD available."
Fine early Burl Ives solos
James D. Jones | 10/17/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Here Burl Ives is working solo with just his own guitar, and no backup instruments or voices. This is an English release - apparently the publisher, Columbia River, is not affiliated with Columbia/CBS/Sony, which recorded and owns much of Ives' best work. I'd guess this 51-minute CD is probably taken from a tape of an early 1940s radio broadcast; the selections - true folksongs rather than his later pop recordings - are largely the same as what he recorded for Columbia around that time, and his voice and style here are very similar to those. Here he precedes each song with a few words of introduction, in much the same way that he did with several of his later children's songs for Columbia (on "Little White Duck", which now seems to be out of print, and some tracks on "A Twinkle In Your Eye"); serious Burl Ives fans will appreciate this bit of talk rather than being distracted by it. The sound quality on the entire CD is quite good, but not perfect; but then, this is now the only source available for most of these wonderful Burl Ives folk solos."
