Few performers in any genre have managed the song writing and performing bulk of country bluesman Bukka White. His 1973 album, Big Daddy, came a decade after he hit a late-in-life stride during the '60s blues revival. And at 62 years old, you would expect White to have calmed his heavy-as-a-ton guitar strums and awesome, gritty vocal bellow. No way. In White, it's as if the John Henry legend had been embodied in the bluesman. On this CD, White's roots in the Mississippi Delta are profusely evident, with his storytelling in prime form, straining at the perfectly dramatic moments. And his forceful steel guitar-playing alternates between taut, percussive rhythmic strums and hard-hit slide notes and solo chords. He revisits the "Sic 'Em Dogs on Me" and "Aberdeen, Mississippi Blues" and shines in tough, full-bodied performances. --Andrew Bartlett
