CD ReviewsCould've had more to it Said Head | MN, USA | 11/03/2009 (4 out of 5 stars) "My one complaint is really the same that I had with BG's 'Insiding' release: why edit? There's certainly more than enough room on a single CD for (I should think, but even if the full version of the title piece, 'Music For Fruit', wouldn't entirely fit on a CD, why does it have to be reduced to only 11 1/2 minutes?). I suppose if the full recording were a bit lacking with some dull spots, it would still be worth hearing in full for archival reasons (as a big Gilbert fan that's something I would love to hear).
Anyway, the music is much in the style of Insiding and the Shivering Man, commissioned for different performances and co-produced with Paul Kendall (another incredible noise-loving musician who's often worked with Gilbert, Graham Lewis, and Wire, Nitzer Ebb, Depeche Mode, among others). While the title track is good, I'd say the best piece on here would have to be 'Push', a climaxing and evolving mix of industrial and ambient pieces. The last track, 'You Might Be Called', is a dancier electro number reminiscent in my mind of Graham Lewis' side project He Said (on which Gilbert did lend some effort); outright it sounds a little dated, but fun to listen to and a great closing piece (I think Angela Conway is present in backing vocals). Overall it's, to me, too short due to the editing, but for what IS here this CD is worth buying." |
