"Never heard Don Patterson before,,,it was for sure a pleasant surprise....to me he is kind of bebopplayer but still have some"Wild Bill Davis" in him..he has a very effortless way of playing that is very appealing. Billy James must be the perfect organ combo drummer....Legend Sonny Stitt as good as expected..plays with a heavy confidence....but for my money it is the playing by Grant Green that makes this album..at this time Grant had been away some time from recordings..he started to look more and more into the funk music of the time..he never lost his jazz chops though ..it is wonderful to hear him play here..a nice fat tone,,single lines that just kills you...and Grant never been known for his comping..but here his comping is very sophisticated and his sound is so beautiful. A few months after this recording he was in Europe playing with Kenny Burrell and Barney Kessel and that session is available on video....even on that guitarbattle session he playes better than ever so it is no wonder his swings his tail off on this recording."
