CD Reviews

An Alternative Rock Masterpiece
Bryan E. Hardesty | Sugar Land, Texas United States | 07/28/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Fans of light and peppy J-Pop music may be a little overwhelmed by the power and depth of this dynamic work, but in the genre of alternative rock, this magnificent CD release is without equal. Upon hearing "Los Angeles," the writers of Time Magazine, in their Sept. 29, 2001 issue, listed the Brilliant Green as one of the "10 Best Bands on Planet Earth."
There is not a weak cut on the disc; no reason to hit the Skip button on your CD player. (Can the same be said for releases from the Smashing Pumpkins, R.E.M., Foo Fighters, Live, Green Day, etc.?) This band has mixed the perfect blend of thrashing punk guitars, rich acoustic guitars, gothic organs and sweet orchestral strings to compliment the willowy vocals of Tomoko Kawase, whose voice soars to a range somewhere between Sheryl Crow and Jewel.
Though most eyes are drawn to the enchanting Tomoko, credit for the Brilliant Green's infectious sound lies primarily with Shunsaki Okuda, the band's bassist, chief songwriter, and studio whiz. Complex melodies and hooks will capture the ears of even the most jaded cynics. The drawback lies in the fact that the songs are all performed in Japanese. Such is poison to the uncreative radio programmers and nervous record company executives in the west. And that's a pity. Few albums are ever this exquisitely perfect from cut to cut, from beginning to end."

"This cd is unbelieveable...it has the power to put you in such a mellow mood with its soft and sweet catchy melodies. It hasnt left my cd player since i bought it. it doesnt matter that i dont understand what shes saying..i think it sounds better that way anyway. i definitely recommend this cd to just about anyone! im fairly new to japanese music but im glad i came across this cd. i also own their self-titled cd..which is great as well..but this one is better. i bought their cds before i even heard any of their music. it was purchased based on the reviews on amazon and its as great as everyone said it was. phew!
All the songs are great but the BEST songs are tracks 3,4,6,7,8,10,11
however, if you do plan on buying this cd..its cheaper as Yesasia.com! you'll probably save about $10. GO BUY THE CD!!!"
No matter what people may say...

"...this is TBG's best album by far. Production values are high and every song is perfect. Listeners who aren't used to Japanese or Jpop music may feel a little left out of the loop, but most likely they'll simply overlook it since the music makes up for it 10 times fold. I don't listen to American music anymore because most of it is crap these days, and The Brilliant Green is one of my favorite Jpop/Jrock groups. This album adds dirty grunge to their previous fluffy sound. The most worthy CD yet."
