"THE BACK O' THE NORTH WIND, Brian McNeill's 1991 release, is a collection of Scottish folk songs based on the lives of Scots who emigrated to the United States for various political and economic reasons. Those who have grown weary of mass-produced, corporate country music in America will find McNeill's folk songs inventive and emotionally compelling. My personal favorites include the title track (adapted, ironically, from the American folk tune "Jack O'Diamonds") as well as "Ewen and the Gold" and "Strong Women Rule Us All With Their Tears." This CD demonstrates that many of the roots of American C&W and folk music lie in the highlands of Scotland, where Brian McNeill still knows how to do it right.I can't recommend this CD enough. Get it while you have the chance."
