The Most Peaceful Ambient Record I've Heard
Christopher Marlowe | Boston | 07/04/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"If your idea of good ambient music is a long, peaceful movement to which you can fall asleep, you've found it.

Along with the Pearl, and Ambient 2, this is an extremely tranquil disc. Whenever I want to pass out from a long day, this is the CD I put on. Unlike Harold Budd's the White Arcades or Eno's Ambient 4: On Land, Thursday Afternoon doesn't have any somber or ominous notes. Instead the sound is warmer and more upbeat, if you could ever use that term to describe ambient.

As mentioned above, the disc has but one track, which is what makes it great for sleeping or relaxation. Set it and forget it! On the other hand, the form doesn't lend itself to an introduction to ambient. I recommend Eno's Ambient 1: Music for Airports, or Budd's the White Arcades, if you're trying out the genre.

I have only experienced this record in the new remastered version. The sound quality leaves nothing to be desired, but there isn't much packaging to speak of--if that is important to you."
