CD Reviews

So fine... so fine... so fine...

(5 out of 5 stars)

"In the liner notes it says this CD is dedicated to the memory of Jimmy Smith, Eddie Harris, Grover Washington Jr. and Long John Baldry. And it does indeed sound like a labor of love from Mr. Auger. It is one of those rare discs that seems totally inspired by love, an album of the heart.

Also in the liner notes is a beautiful thank-you to Brian's son Karma, of whom it is said, "There would be no Oblivion Express if it were not for Karma." I would say that the album sounds like a dedication to everything the artist has ever loved, especially to precious LIFE itself. This is a special, special album that can sit proudly next to the best work Brian Auger has ever done.

Besides the intention of LOVE that radiates through the music, another reason it sounds so beautiful is the extensive use of the Rhodes electric piano, one of the sweetest sounding instruments ever. On the other hand, there's some intense, funky jazz-jamming going on between the keyboards and a small horn section that is expertly arranged. But don't expect to hear any guitars. Just like Auger's contemporary, Jean Luc Ponty, guitars have now been retired from the sound.

I give this CD my highest recommendation, and if you're a long-time fan like myself, you'll love it. It's classic Brian Auger and it truly reflects the soul of the artist. Beautiful."
