Synopsis

Album Description
Import exclusive 1997 compilation from jazz fusion act Michael & Randy Brecker, two of the most in-demand & respected musicians on the New York music scene have graced countless records with their distinctive horn arrangements for more than twenty-five years. Born in Philadelphia the brothers moved to New York in the sixties where Randy joined Blood, Sweat & Tears before becoming part of Horace Silver's quintet. Michael & Randy later hooked up with Billy Cobham to form the pop-jazz collective Dreams whilst also doing session work during the early seventies. By 1974 the two brothers were ready to venture out on their own, releasing the debut single 'Sneakin' Up Behind You'. Although the track was a club favorite it failed to make the charts. The commercial breakthrough came in 1978 with East River, a stomping & funky brass workout which was a top 40 hit in the UK. 12 tracks including 'East River', 'Skunk Funk' & 'Sneakin Up Behind You'.

"Made in EU in 1997, Serial# 74321-51199-2, Playing Time 70:25It seems that most of the CDs I get these days are "re-issues", "best of"s or "remasters". So I've decided to entitle reviews of such items "recycled", because that's typically what they are (and I'm running out of ideas for those things). This 12 track compilation lifts tracks from their albums up to 1981's "Straphangin'", but at least features full-length versions.Chronological content is as follows:From "The Brecker Brothers": Some Skunk Funk, Rocks, Sneakin' Up Behind You.From "Back To Back", (absolutely nothing...)From "Don't Stop The Music": Funky Sea Funky DewFrom "Heavy Metal Be-Bop": East River, Inside OutFrom "Detente": Baffled, Tee'd OffFrom "Straphangin'": Straphangin', Threesome, Jacknife, Not EthiopiaBecause the album is released on BMG, only material from the Arista label is featured: it still doesn't explain why the liner notes say the group disbanded in 1981 (which is true) but omits the fact they've re-united in 1992 (yeah, on a different label!).The material selected is mostly instrumental, combining well their blend of jazz and funk.A nice introduction to the band, with great support by the other members."
