Synopsis

Album Description
Pianist Marc Copland first came to public attention with his trio with Gary Peacock and Billy Hart, later with his All-Star Quintet with Randy Brecker, Bob Berg and Dennis Chambers, and still later with his quartet with guitarist John Abercrombie. John Abercrombie possesses a unique voice as a jazz guitarist, combining evolving technologies with a tradition well represented by jazz standards. Kenny Wheeler has played with Tubby Hayes, Ronnie Scott, Anthony Braxton and many others. Although he devotes much attention to composition and writes all of the material that he records as a leader, his work as a trumpeter and flugelhorn player is what he considers most important.

CD Reviews

Highly enjoyable
Olukayode Balogun | Leeds, England | 06/07/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"There's always magic in the air whenever John Abercrombie (guitar) and Kenny Wheeler (trumpet & flugelhorn) get together and this album is no exception. Marc Copland is new to me and he is a total revelation here. He joins in on brilliantly played piano - it is his album after all - and together the trio perform 9 songs that show care and thought in their execution and demand careful listening therefore. I found the absence of a drummer and/or bassist rather strange at first but once I got used to it, it made perfect sense. The result is a sound that is light and airy, yet deep and complex.

Besides, I can play this one while working late at night, without any risk of disturbing the neighbours. It gets top marks on that basis alone.

Three of the songs are by Abercrombie, two by Copland and two by Wheeler. One, "Jive Samba" is by Nat Adderley and another, the album closer "Taking A Chance On Love" is by Vernon Duke. All are truly brilliant songs, recorded in the Netherlands in 2004 and competently produced by Hein Van de Geyn.

Highly enjoyable. Highly recommended."
