Synopsis

There are moments in this performance when Leonard Bernstein's willful exaggerations of tempo threaten to bring the music to a dead halt. Why he felt the need to "help" Brahms in such a fashion is just one of those many mysteries that will never be solved. All that we have is the evidence of our ears, and that tells us that Bernstein's Brahms is simply a mess, however well played and recorded, and a low point in one of the world's most distinguished discographies. Avoid. --David Hurwitz

CD Reviews

The best of Bernstein's late Brahms
Santa Fe Listener | Santa Fe, NM USA | 09/11/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I remember when these reocrdings first came out and thinking how thin and irritating the early digital sound was. It has improved somewhat, enough to appreciate the performance, which is veyr late Lenny--pulled all out of shape, underlined all over the place, but somehow a real picture, true to the composer. As with much of hs late work, to appreciate this performance you have to suspend your expectations and go where Bernstein wants to drag you."
Excellent selection for the price

"... Bernstein's VPO Brahms 4th is right up there with the legendary Carlos Klieber account. Lenny's performance is simply the other side of the same coin. His is a superbly played Brahms in a huge, massive, and weighty mode. Lenny dives into every nook and cranny of the 4th movement to produce a realization so moving that I'll never hear its like again, leaving me to supplement this movement often on other recordings. Also, Lenny's account of the Tragic Overture on this disc is superb. *But most important of all*, you cannot ask for a better performance *at this price*."
