Synopsis

Album Description
This deluxe four-CD set showcases Brahms' four totemic symphonies in multiple performances by the 20th century's greatest conductor/orchestra combinations. A virtual master class in the art of interpretation, this collection features two performances of each Brahms masterpiece: in Symphony No. 1, Arturo Toscanini with the NBC Orchestra (1941) and Leopold Stokowski with the Philadelphia Orchestra (1936); in No. 2, Wilhelm Furtwängler/Vienna Philharmonic (1945) and Pierre Monteux/San Francisco Symphony (1945); in No. 3, Willem Mengelberg/Concertgebouw Orchestra (1932) and Bruno Walter/Vienna Philharmonic (1936); and in No. 4, Victor de Sabata/Berlin Philharmonic (1939) and Felix Weingartner/London Symphony Orchestra (1938). To recapture the magic of these thrilling performances, rare 78s were digitally restored using the 24-bit CAP 440 technique. In its second, redesigned edition (complete with new protective slipcase), the 96-page companion book features vintage, rarely seen photos of the performers plus evocative images of the composer. The extensive written materials include an introduction by Pulitzer Prize?winner Tim Page, an essay by James Miller ("Johannes Brahms: The Making of an Old Master"), and detailed artist biographies from The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. All texts appear in English, French and German.

CD Reviews

Good but expensive
Albert B. Chen | 06/28/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This might be the most expensive Brahms collection I've ever have.

But the content is defintely worth while for a fan.

The record is old but still in good condition. Toscanini, Stokowski, and Furtwangler's performance is fascinating enough to spend a fortune on this."
