"Unlike amazon.com's reviewers, I think that Horowitz and Toscanini were a stunning combination in the Tchaikovsky concerto. Sure, Toscanini was a musical tyrant and control-freak. But here this works to the benefit of both pianist and concerto. Too often the loosely structured first movement of the concerto just feels rambling, and too often Horowitz let his pianistic gifts overrule his musical instincts. Here, Toscanini prevents both things from happenning, and this produces just about the most convincing performance of the Tchaikovsky I've ever heard. The recording is acceptable for the 1940s, and even the Brahms is a fascinating performance. If you want to know why the Tchaikovsky is a great concerto, you have no alternative but to buy this CD."
