Gould's Penultimate Recordings...

".
Made the year of his untimely death (1982), these stunning Brahms readings are Gould's penultimate recordings. [His last recordings were appropriately of Richard Strauss Richard Strauss: Sonata, Op. 5; 5 Piano .]
Gould had never before played Brahms' Ballades. He sight-read the score; played through them once or twice; and recorded them straight-through: the audible result is nigh miraculous. (Too bad GG would never play for us Chopin's Ballades--the impudent genius...!)
The dashing Op. 79 Rhapsodies are somewhat in the "Hungarian" vein, here well-performed (although honorable mention must go to Lupu's realizations of same Brahms: Two Rhapsodies, Op. 79; Piano Pieces, Opp. 117-119 ).
[NOTE: cf. Schönberg's Op 33 Piano Pieces for an interesting Modernistic parallel with Brahms' Op. 79.]
