Fluid, sometimes warm-hearted but not enough drama

Brahms was not a comfortable man, despite his benevolent-loking beard and sensitive eyes. His music expesses great emotional and artistic struggle, often cast in an Olympian mold but human nevertheless. For me, his sympponies are monuments of dramatic conflict, and I think any conductor who sits back comfortably and covers the music with melted chocolate has wandered far from the composer's spirit. That's certainly true of Chailly, alas, who gives us plush-velvet readings at comfy tempos without any stress or strain. It's all quite easy to swallow. If you like this approach to Brahms, also favored by Muti and Sawallisch, then this Concertgebouw cycle has gorgeous sonics and golden playing. In terms of challenge and inner drama, however, both are completely lacking. Fans of the Amsterdam orchestra can do better with Haitink's early Brahms cycle for Philips. It can be found at a steep discount on the used market."
