CD Reviews

Yamataka at the controls

(4 out of 5 stars)

"If I can recall the experimental Super Roots cds(basically Eye Yamataka messing around in the studio) went something like this:

Volumes 1 and 2:Cartoon insanity,toy instruments,banging on pots and pans,clapping,goofy chanting

Volume 3:Karaoke of the Cosmos-pretty much what it says,a basic propulsive vocal-free hardcore tune that drives the same groove for at least a full half hour

Volume 5(there is no 4)I forget the name, but it's a long gently abrasive, psychedelic wash of guitar, cymbals, percussion, that rises and falls ever so slightly

Volume 6 is where things really got interesting and you can definitely hear that some seeds were planted here that would later become ideas for the Super Ae and VisionCreationNewsun cds.

This is a cd that really can be appreciated with headphones.Alot of the tracks are simply a drum beat or simple rhythm processed all to hell. The feeling on some tracks is like the aural equivalent of a picture left out in the sun too long,it's all decayed, and parts are missing, but there is "something"intersting there.

I find alot of these tracks very interesting from a production standpoint.Track 10 is a simple drum beat, and then later perhaps a bass/guitar riff(or maybe none at all?)but the track has kind of an extreme panning effect which breaks up the song making it very "jittery".It sounds weird at first, but if you're in the right mood you can actually hear the complete song, that is,the puzzle reveals itself.

Other tracks are very beautiful,if simplistic, with warm sunny synths and tasteful percussion.

I don't know who to recommend this album to,it's not an album of songs,or jams,or even instrumentals. It's very interesting for sure, perhaps to fans of experimental audio art.

If you can find the others, volume 7 and 8 both contain one song each with a few remixes, one being a long Mekons inspired riff-fest,and the other reworkings of a non-Boredoms song called Jungle Taitei(sic)that is kind of junglish sounding.

More proof that Boredoms weren't the bunch of one-note morons their detractors thought."
Boomin Boredoms Conceptual Tribute to Neu!

"Tune in, turn on, and drop Out to this Super Roots 6, the best of the whole super roots series. "01" Kicks of the disc with this crazy , machine gun sounding rumble of drums looped at insane speeds; it is totally trippy and a fitting beginning to a Boredoms disc. Next, a moment of almost silence on "0(x12)" before the slowly unfolding hindu-esque melody of "6" comes in and locks you into its hypnotic lock-grooved sway. This is my favorite boredoms track ever. It is simple but filled with abandon and mystery as you aren't sure where it is going to end up but it is mesmerizing. "2"(which is actually track 4)begins the Neu! vamping as Eye tweeks out this funky porno break from space. He does it again at different speeds, with different weird accompaniments on "9", "5", "10", & "13", but it works the best as "2". "11" and "14" are white noise techno experiments that rock. "7' is a version of "01". (This is all of course stylistically like the 2nd of the Neu! Lp's with all the versions of the tracks at 33, 78, 45 on the record player, rerecorded and messed with.) There are other cool mystery drone rock surprises."

"Just thought any and all Boredoms freaks would like to know that the record label Vice is re-issuing all the Super Roots releases with the exception of Super Roots 2 (which I believe was a limited edition available during the release of Chocolate Synthesizer), and Super Roots 4 (which doesn't exist).

Super Roots 1, 3, and 5 will be out in January. Super Roots 6, 7, and 8 in February. Once the band gets around to making Super Roots 9 it will be available in Super Roots 10 - the collected box set.

I'm confident that I speak for all VOOOORE-heads:

AIYIEYIEYIEYIEYIEYIEYIEYIEYIEYIEYIEYIEYIEYEIYIEYIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
