The ever-changing music industry is blazing yet another new trail these days through the creative efforts of a number of new artists daring to venture beyond the genre identity. Bonnie Ste-Croix has been doing her own thing for years, befuddling the brains of the industry with her fusion of soul, R&B and jazz influence, folk lyric and pop topped with, what usually feels like, an injection of organic mood de-stabilizer. But think about it, if you could combine the style and qualities of all the comparisons quoted (see quotes below) and wrap them all into one person; my only question would be-why the heck wouldn't you? Summer June, Bonnie Ste-Croix's newest release in 2002, is another enticing morsel that will up the ante several notches with regards to a new mainstream embrace of the counter-culture approach. In other words, it will intrigue you, flummox you and most definitely enchant. Rolling off the reel with an emotive anthem in Echoes, Ste-Croix does, once again, in no uncertain terms remind you that she is above all else a passionate vocalist. She moves with ease into an R&B groove with Gravity and then into her steamy jazz ballad, the album's namesake, Summer June. What turns up next might be a blues vibe that sounds like it was born in the old swamp instead of the urban-likes of Vancouver or a pop-rock radio-friendly gruvin' tune called If You Are the One or a lyrically sublime mantra with the moniker, Complete Me. Ste-Croix's finak stroke to the canvas is a cultural tribute to her own heritage in a heart-rending take of her new French ballad. She effortlessly swings into Tu M'as Dit like we might all know exactly what she is saying; but that is her gift. She has a knack at making you feel like you are part of the experience even when she delivers the story in another language. It just one of those things that you just can't explain. And why bother? Don't fight it; just add it to your must-have list. My best advice is just sit back and enjoy the ride. You are in good hands.
