Synopsis

Album Description
When BOMB THE BASS released "Future Chaos? in late 2008, it had been nearly a decade in the making. Now, barely a year later, TIM SIMENON is back with a new album whose accomplished songwriting and sonic scope belie the spontaneity with which it came together. The title says it all: "Back to Light". The dusky atmosphere of Future Chaos has given way to a more radiant sound, buoyed by waves of synthesizers and propelled by clean-lined grooves. Raising the tempo, Simenon takes inspiration from classic techno, while vocal contributions from RICHARD DAVIS, KELLEY POLAR, THE BATTLE OF LAND AND SEA, and PAUL CONBOY bring Bomb the Bass into newfound melodic focus. It's a brighter, more immediate sound than before; warmer, too, with the singers' voices positively glowing inside intricately woven electronic nests. But there's no lack of nuance. Every track is a delicate balance of intimate delivery and cosmic sonics, underscored by a faint sense of melancholy. Simenon worked on the album with a new collaborator: GUI BORATTO, Brazil's master craftsman of deep, melodic techno, known for his records on Kompakt. Not only does MARTIN GORE of DEPECHE MODE feature on the album?s closer, there will be 4 remix packages to be serviced to radio coming from the likes of DJ MARKY, JOHN TEJADA, EXTRAWELT, JAKE ONE, MARK E, ATOM TM, S.P.Y. and more!

CD Reviews

Sublime and groovy...
Nse Ette | Lagos, Nigeria | 03/02/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Tom Simenon of Bomb The Bass has largely ditched the sample-heavy Hip Hop sound of his earlier hits (songs like "Beat dis", "Megablast" or "Winter in July") for a more sublime Eurodisco sound (akin to Pet Shop Boys or Delphic) more in line with 2008's "Future chaos", although this is a bit more upbeat than that largely melancholic effort. Vocalist Paul Conboy who featured on most tracks on "Future chaos" appears on 4 tracks here.

"Back to light" is only the fifth full album in a 22 year career and features chilly effects-laden dance numbers like "Boy girl", the throbbing "X ray eyes" (with dreamily layered harmonies), or the stomping lead-off single "The infinities" (the album title is taken from a line here - "Back to light, pure energy...") with ghostly harmonies.

"Price on your head" is melancholic and dizzying at the same time, while the harmony-rich "Blindspot" could almost pass for an electronic Fleet Foxes.

"Start" is dreamy synth Pop, "Burn less brighter" a swirling clap-filled song, while "Happy to be cold" would do Giorgio Moroder proud.

"Up the mountain" is a spare House number, the lone song with female lead vocals (Battle of the land and sea), and closing is the instrumental ballad "Milakia" (with Depeche Mode's Martin Gore) which gradually builds to a euphoric climax.

An outstanding electronic album, and one that will be tough to top."
