Virtuoso playing

"This recording, (and the recording of the other two quartets from Op. 32 on 8.555042) is a bargain if you are captivated by Boccherini. I suppose he is an acquired taste, not so beloved by those who prefer Haydn's superior intellectual gifts. But as pure music, Boccherini's is wonderful.
The alternative set on Das Alte Werk (Telfunken), (which I have on LP), by Quartetto Esterhazy is much more characterful on original instruments. But that doesn't necessarily make it better.
These performances are somewhat more "modern" sounding, clean cut, virtuoso, lots of brio etc. Very much in the Italianite tradition, you might say.
People who already love Boccherini will probably buy both. If you haven't sampled Boccherini before, start here. The price is right!"

"Purchased this CD along with the NAXOS-Boccherini: String Quartets, Opp. 32 and 39. These are excellent String Quartets(SQs). After listening to and collecting many composer's SQs, I am convinced Boccherini was a genius in his own way. His SQs are different from the Viennese composers, Haydn, Mozart, Vanhal(Bohemian), and Dittersdorf, however they never lose their courtly elegance, grace, melody and beauty. That is the one thing you can say about Boccherini his sound is distinct and unique. If you enjoy these SQs you will enjoy his String Quintets. Admirers of 18th century music (the classical period) need to include these CDs in their collection especially at this price."
