Afrobeat Meets Filter Disco

"This release compiles the Africanism 12 inch vinyl series released by Yellow Productions in France. Africanism is an ongoing series of vinyl only single releases by such house music producers as Bob Sinclair, Liquid People, DJ Gregory, Mighty Bop, Salome De Bahia, and Lego. The purpose of Africanism is to show the relationship between the afro-beat music of Fela Kuti, and modern house music that is coming out of France. House music, driven by its relentless 4/4 beat, resembles the repetition of afrobeat. When the tribal drums and chants of african origin are subject to the meticulous and technical production found in house music, the results can be awesome. This is the effect of most of the songs present on this disc. Songs such as "Zulu's" and "Call It Jungle Jazz" feature some incredibly groovy percussion work. Others are less advanced, as the b-sides of each release are included, "Love Is The Answer" is another disco sampling workout, while the a-side of its release is truly grand. The shortcoming of this set is its inauthenticity, this is african music being made by french men. It lacks the emotional power of anything by Femi Kuti, although the material is similar. The mix here keeps most of the songs intact, with several pauses. Track this release down if you enjoy french dance music like Daft Punk, Air, or St. Germain. Its smooth."
