Synopsis

Album Description

Four CD box-set features 95 digitally remastered tracks that represent the most comprehensive collection yet of Marley's recordings from the late 60's & early 70's, which many consider his most creative period. The set's lavishly illustrated, 44 page color book contains detailed track by track commentary, along with an authoritative introduction to the background to the music scene in Jamaica at the time. Each of the themed discs have been carefully sequenced for listening purposes. The first two discs gather predominantly rastafarian reggae, whilst the third & fourth discs comprise titles with their roots in gospel, spirituals, soul & folk rock. Packaged in a digibook (approx. 5.5 x 10 inches). 2001.

Great pre-Tuff Gong collection! Excellent sound quality!

"There are so many CD's containing collections of Bob Marley's pre-Tuff Gong recordings it is ridiculous. When Jad Records released the 8 CD set of "The Complete Bob Marley & Wailers" I initially thought all my prayers were answered, but they were not. Unfortunately the Jad Records release is not complete, some songs are missing due to copyright restrictions and some tracks are alternate takes which sound markedly different than the popular versions.

This box set produced by "Snapper Music Group" AKA "Charley Records" stands out from all the other bootlegs and official releases for the following reasons:

#1 The CD book notes the year each song was recorded.

#2 The CD book notes the producer of each song.

#3 The CD book lists the musicians who played on these recording.

#4 Quantity, this box set contains 95 songs! This includes 19 dub versions. Each CD is almost 80 minuets long, that's a total of 320 minuets of music.

#5 Track sequencing, the songs are well sequenced giving the box set a flow that is great to listen to.

#6 Great sound! The sound is nice and clean, the bass was not artificially enhanced. There are no phasing problems, hiss, or scratches. You should remember that these songs were recorded using inexpensive equipment and will always sound dated.

This is not a complete pre-Tuff Gong collection, but it does offer many great tunes from this stage of Marley's carrier with great sound and well documented packaging."
