CD Reviews

Unforgettable, Powerful

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Right on the heels of "Blood on the Tracks" Bob Dylan comes out with another record that you can't get enough of. From the long songs, "Hurricane" and "Joey," to the ditty like "Mozambique," to the mystical "Isis" and the terrific "Black Diamond Bay" this is a record you can't get enough of. I don't know why Dylan chose to have a co-writer (the late Jacques Levy) on these songs, but it works, the lyrics are unforgettable, powerful. Scarlet Rivera's violin cuts like a knife, while giving the whole album a gypsy like flavor. It's one of my favorites and if you give it a listen, I'm sure it'll be one of your favorites too."
A Fine Record with a Haunting Gypsy Sound

"This is an album that I like a lot. Dylan's choice of Emmylou Harris as a female vocalist works wonders. The way her voice blends with his, is superb. Ronnie's voice on "Hurricane" seems to add a lot of punch to the record. And Scarlet Rivera's gypsy violin is nothing short of haunting, especially on the Marty Robbin's like ballad "Romance in Durango" and the two mystical songs, "Isis" and "One More Cup of Coffee." "Joey" is long and not one of my favorite Dylan songs. I listen to it on occasion, but when I put the record on my iPod, I left "Joey" off. I love "Black Diamond Bay," which is my friend Tiffany's favorite Dylan song, but for me the piece de resistance is "Isis." This record, like all Dylan records, is a keeper."
