CD Reviews

Beautiful box of Beautiful Music!
Kevin Fontenot | New Orleans, LA United States | 02/18/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you ever wonder exactly how great country music can be, just listen to disc 4 in this fantastic box. The Blue Sky Boys were famous for their tight harmony singing and sentimental fare. The disc opens with plantive "Why Not Confess"--not a religious song, but a lover's plea for honesty--continues through the religious chestnut "Turn Your Radio On" and then to beautiful renditions of "The Last Letter" and "Don't Say Goodbye." And that's just one disc, there are four others to continue the story. Long overlooked by reissuers, the Blue Sky Boys have needed this quality treatment for years. Plus the set contains a hardbound biography--extremely well written by noted scholar Bill C. Malone. Absolutely beautiful and worth the wait."
Comes with a high body count, but worth it!
Garden Gnome | The Bull City, North Carolina | 04/24/2006

"Has anyone sat down and counted the number of people who die in these songs?

Murder, disease, exposure to the elements, and of course your more mundane old age gets a few. Quite a number of folks paid the ultimate price in the making of these songs. I like to think of them up in heaven, looking down upon us all, but honestly (and sorry if I spoil the ending here) a lot of them don't make it there.

The price they paid (and the one you'll pay for this set) is worth every penny. It's definitely on the short list of things to grab when the house is on fire.

Louvins, Delmores, sure. But, push comes to shove, Bill and Earl are the best pound-for-pound brother duet ever. Strong words I know, but buy this and I bet you'll be hard-pressed to disagree. I can't think of a finer collection of music than this and I doubt there is one.

Bear Family never does less than a stellar job and they prove it again here. Best record label out there? Who can argue?
