Album DescriptionAll of the important European and touring American Jazz musicians played at Paris' Blue Note Café during the '50s and '60s. It was there that the only existing recorded collaborations between saxophonist Pony Poindexter and guitarist René Thomas were taped. The guitarist led his own quintet which also featured pianist Georges Arvanitas. Taped with amateur equipment, the exquisite quality of the music does not change the fact these are certainly not high fidelity recordings. In fact they are more jam-session style performances, with extended solos reminiscent of the performances captured at Minton's in New York by Jerry Newman in the early '40s. For instance, nearly all of the tunes are incomplete, as they were apparently too long to fit on the tape reels that were originally used, and the noise of the club ambiance frequently intrudes on the music. However, these are the only existing recordings of this formation, and the only testimony of Pony Poindexter and Rene Thomas playing together. Nine tracks. Gambit. 2007.
