CD ReviewsA great album by a unique artist Jazz fan from New England | Boston, MA, USA | 12/21/2007 (5 out of 5 stars) "Blossom Dearie [her birth name] has been known since the 1950s for her unique voice (innocent and girlish in tone, knowing and worldly in manner) and cool piano stylings. This album, some twenty years after her emergence, has her in if anything better voice than ever, playful but with real emotional depth and maturity. It has a little different sound than her earlier recordings, and the electric piano and laid back arrangements sound as intimate as a one-on-one conversation. The best tunes are "I'm Shadowing You", "I'm Hip", the beautiful ballad "Isn't That the Thing to Do", and a great version of the old chestnut "Send in the Clowns", but everything on the album is great.
I've loved this album since I first heard it on a library copy in 1975 (I bought the LP for myself soon after), and I was really happy to see it reissued in this fine import edition, which besides really nice sound also has all the lyrics in the CD booklet as well as the score to "I'm Shadowing You". It's expensive, but if you ever liked any of Blossom Dearie's work, or maybe just any offbeat, sly jazzy vocalist, it's worth it." |
