Black Sunshine was initially the brainchild of extreme sports icon Matt Reardon, one of the top rated free-skiers in the world. Reardon suffered a traumatic accident while competing at the World Extreme Invitational in New Zealand that nearly took it all away. Reardon fell after attempting a double back flip and tore the cartilage in his leg, which resulted in him undergoing 11 operations to repair the damage. During the recovery process he contracted a Staph infection that almost resulted in his leg being amputated.
It was a seriously scary time for me, because not only had I lost everything I had ever worked for, but I also suffered loss of my best friend and my nephew, who was like a brother to me, remembers Matt Reardon.
While confined to a hospital bed Matt tried to come to terms with the fact that he may never walk again. He needed to find a way to get through these hard times and turned to the only thing he had left; his music.
I put everything I had into songwriting, because I was seriously disturbed by what happened, he says. Thankfully the doctors were able to save my leg and I knew that I had been given a second chance. The one thing that kept me going during that time was my music, so it was a clear sign that I was being given a second chance. The song Once In My Life was written during this time, as I recovered from the accident and my loss. The song is about moving on, remembering and respecting how precious life is. Music is the only therapy that makes sense to me.
From there, Reardon jumped into the shark-infested waters of the music business. Armed with an arsenal full of heavy guitar riffs and infectious melodies, Reardon assembled Black Sunshine to bring his signature brand of emotionally intense, driven hard rock to the masses.
Ultimately, his perseverance paid off as Matt was able to assemble a world-class band. He recruited drummer Matt Toast Young (Billy Idol), and guitarist Charles Lee, who was a member of the John 5 (Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie) side-project LOSER.
At that time Lee was playing with Filter and had recently spent two-months on the road performing with Theory of a Deadman for their stint on Motley Crue s CRUEFEST. Finally, bassist Christopher Serafini, formerly of Wind Up Recording artist Pollen, joined the group and gave Black Sunshine a heavy, thick sounding low-end.
Wasting no time, Black Sunshine took to the road and immediately began to tour the globe. The band has since traveled the world extensively and performed shows in North America, Europe, Japan and New Zealand. Black Sunshine has graced the stage at such legendary venues as The REX in Paris, France and Olympia arena in London, England, where they performed for rabid crowds. Most recently, Black Sunshine performed for thousands of American troops on the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz.
Together the group managed to assemble the 11 blistering hard rock songs that comprise the group's self-titled debut album. With Grammy award winning producer Bob Marlette (Shinedown, Seether, Filter) at the wheel, Black Sunshine was able to record an album that stacks up against the group's past musical accomplishments and stands tall against today's modern rock heavyweights. Marlette was able to bring out the soaring melodies that Black Sunshine is known for, while polishing the riffs to cut like a machete. Marlette proclaimed Black Sunshine s debut stands toe to toe with any top rock album out on the shelf!
